02 CLIENT GUIDE

DOMAINS, HOSTING, EMAIL AND SSL EXPLAINED

The site you see in a browser is only part of the system. A reliable online presence depends on a domain name, DNS configuration, a hosting environment, security settings and business accounts with clear ownership.

Domain name and DNS

A domain is the public address people type. DNS records tell browsers and email systems where to send requests. Keep the registration under an account your business controls, with accurate recovery details and renewals turned on where appropriate.

Web hosting and infrastructure

Hosting makes site files, APIs and databases available online. A small content website, a high-traffic store and a custom business platform may require very different environments, storage, backups and operational monitoring.

SSL/TLS and HTTPS

TLS protects data in transit between a visitor and your server when configured correctly. A valid certificate does not prove that an application is free of vulnerabilities or that private customer data is handled appropriately.

Business email

An address using your business domain can look more professional than personal mail. Mailboxes, DNS authentication records, storage, spam protection and renewal billing need to be planned separately from web hosting.

Backups and recovery

Ask what is backed up, how often, where backups are stored and whether restoration is tested. Backups that have never been checked may not be usable in an emergency.

Access, account transfer and exit planning

Keep a record of registrar, DNS, hosting, repository, analytics and third-party subscription access. The written agreement should identify who can update production services and what happens if the maintenance arrangement ends.

Questions to prepare before requesting a quote

  • Who legally owns the domain?
  • Who pays domain, hosting and email renewal charges?
  • Where will the website and data be hosted?
  • What backups are retained and how is restore tested?
  • Who holds administrator credentials and recovery contacts?
  • What happens if you change developers or hosting providers?

Example: how this affects a real project

A company may own its domain but not have access to the hosting account because a former contractor opened it under a personal email. Confirming these details early prevents avoidable delays and lock-in.

Frequently asked questions

Does domain registration include a website?

No. A domain is an address; the website and hosting are separate.

Is SSL enough to protect customer information?

No. TLS is one layer; access control, secure coding, updates, backups and responsible data processing also matter.

Can hosting be included in my package?

It can be if the scope says so. Ask what resources, billing and support are included.
