Know what kind of example you are seeing
A sample concept is a design or working demonstration built to illustrate an approach. A studio-owned product is a real product the studio operates itself. Commissioned client work should only be described that way if genuinely commissioned and authorized for display.
Try the critical workflows
On a demo, inspect navigation, mobile responsiveness, service pages and form behavior. If it claims booking or sales capabilities, ask whether inventory, payment and confirmations are live, simulated or illustrative.
Ask about admin tools
Customers see the public interface; business staff need to update content, process orders, review bookings or export reports. A static front-end demonstration may not include these operational features.
Compare matching scope, not only screenshots
Ask whether the proposal includes original design, content, product data, admin features, SEO, hosting, accessibility testing, mobile app submission, maintenance and third-party costs. Two quotes may appear different simply because they include different work.
Look for documented handover
Check whether the scope explains who receives credentials, where data resides, which accounts remain under the client and how future changes are requested.
Look for honest claims
Be cautious about guaranteed rankings, fabricated testimonials, unspecified certifications or promises that any custom application can be delivered instantly. Ask what can be verified and what remains a future feature.
Questions to prepare before requesting a quote
- Is this a sample, owned product or verified commissioned project?
- Which features are genuinely functioning?
- Does the mobile layout work on your device?
- Are there administrator screens and data workflows?
- Are payments or bookings simulated?
- What is included in the quoted package?
- What ownership and maintenance rights will you receive?
Example: how this affects a real project
A resort concept demo may display room photographs and a “Reserve” button. Before assuming it includes working reservations, ask whether the button submits an inquiry, opens a third-party booking service or checks a real database.
Frequently asked questions
Are sample website demos free to use?
Previews can be free to explore. Customizing, licensing, building and hosting a site based on a sample should be quoted separately unless explicitly offered free.
Should I choose the cheapest quote?
Compare deliverables, exclusions, support and ownership. A lower price may omit operational capabilities you need.
Can my site match a competitor exactly?
Reference sites can guide requirements, but their branding, artwork and protected content must not be copied without rights.
